Turkana’s Lomeguro gold mine undergoes safety review ahead of reopening

Director of Mining, Merimug Eloto, emphasised the county's commitment to global safety standards, environmental safeguarding, and community inclusion.

Turkana's prominent gold mining site, Lomeguro, which was closed in May 2025 due to safety concerns, is undergoing a crucial assessment aimed at ensuring its safe reopening.

A joint delegation led by the Directorate of Mining, in collaboration with Oil and Gas Group Kenya and Solidardad, recently met with Deputy Governor Dr John Erus to review progress, safety measures, and best practices.

The assessment focuses on evaluating compliance with government-set standards for safety, environmental protection, and community engagement.

Director of Mining, Merimug Eloto, emphasised the county's commitment to global safety standards, environmental safeguarding, and community inclusion.

"Our goal is to make sure mining here is safe and sustainable, which will determine when and how the site reopens," he stated.

The evaluation covers drilling operations, environmental controls, and community involvement, and its findings will shape decisions on the mine's future.

Consultant Engineer Cyrus Jonde noted improvements since previous inspections, while Augustine Masiga of Solidardad stressed the need for stronger environmental protections to reverse land degradation.

The assessment's outcome will influence the next steps in Lomeguro's reopening process, with similar evaluations planned for other Turkana mines, including Nagetei and Locheromoit.

The county government is working with partners and artisanal miners to facilitate a safe and structured return to mining, balancing economic needs with environmental and community concerns.
